E X T E N S I O N READING AND DRAMATIZING (I) Below you will find a slightly adapted scene taken from a play by Richard Brinsley Peake, called PRESUMPTION OR THE FATE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1823). This was the first stage adaptation of the novel and was performed in London. Author Mary Shelley attended the performance and was amused. The production remained influential into the twentieth century, when elements of it (such as lab assistant Fritz) were used in films. Divided in groups of four read the text carefully and translate it. Then each group will make up their own simplified version. Decide who plays the Monster, Elizabeth, Frankenstein and Fritz. Set the scene if possible and act it out. COSTUMES The Monster s appearance and dress Dark black flowing hair; his face, hands, arms and legs all bare, being one colour (greyish), the same as his body; grey cotton dress, fitting quite close, as if it were his flesh. Frankenstein White shirt and black velvet waistcoat; white tunic, open, the sleeves open in front; black pantaloons and black velvet shoes. Elizabeth Grey silk dress; trimmed with white fur; hat to match. Fritz (servant of Frankenstein) Buff jacket and breeches trimmed with orange; blue stockings; russet shoes; small three-cornered hat. 32
