Dickens later collected these pieces in two volumes entitled Sketches by Boz (1836). In these sketches Dickens introduced many of the scenes and much of the subject matter that later appeared in his fiction. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club (1836-1837), stories about a group of rather odd individuals and their travels to Ipswich, Rochester, Bath and elsewhere, again suggest that Dickens the novelist is often difficult to separate from Dickens the journalist. In the 1850s Dickens was founding editor of Household Words and its successor All the Year Round (1859-70). For Dickens, editing a magazine was a way of maintaining close contact with his audience. Dickens s novels first appeared in monthly installments, including Oliver Twist (1837-39), which depicts the London underworld and the hard years of the foundling, Oliver Twist. Nicholas Nickelby (1838-39) is the tale of young Nickleby s struggles to seek his fortune. A Christmas Carol (1843) is one of Dickens s most loved works, which has been adapted for the screen a number of times. Among Dicken s later works are David Copperfield (1849-50), where Dickens used his own personal experiences of work in a factory; A Tale of Two Cities (1859), set in the years of the French Revolution; and Great Expectations (1860-61) begun as a serialized publication in Dickens s periodical All the Year Round on December 1, 1860. It is the story of Pip, an orphan. Dickens participated energetically in all forms of the social life of the time. From the 1840s Dickens spent much time travelling and campaigning against many of the social evils of his time. In addition he gave talks and readings, wrote pamphlets, plays, and letters. In 185868 Dickens made lecturing tours in Britain and the United States. By the end of his last American tour, Dickens s health had seriously deteriorated. He died (suddenly of a stroke on June 8, 1870) at Gadshill (where he lived with two daughters   he had ten children   and his sister-in-law, while his wife   due to marital troubles   lived in London). Dickens had asked that he should be buried  in an inexpensive, unostentatious, and strictly private manner . 30
