When Irving died, Stoker fell into a coma for 24 hours. He struggled on for the next seven years, borrowing money from friends and desperately trying to get returns from his writings, including two volumes of memoirs of his life with Irving, but without success. He wrote a sequel to Dracula, Dracula s Guest, that appeared in 1914. His other books include The Jewel of the Seven Stars (1904), The Lady of the Shroud (1909), A Life of Irving, The Snake s Pass, which was set in Ireland and The Lair of the White Worm, which was filmed by Ken Russell. According to his death certificate, Stoker died of exhaustion, entirely unrewarded in his own lifetime for his creation of one of the most famous horror figures ever. 68
