King Arthur King Arthur and Queen Guenevere It was time for the King of Britain to find a wife. On this occasion, too, Merlin was very helpful and he suggested to Arthur the beautiful Guenevere, daughter of King Laodegan of Carmalide. So Arthur left, followed by Merlin and by thirty-nine knights, to pay a visit to the court of that sovereign1. When they arrived, they found Laodegan and his noblemen discussing a plan to resist the imminent attack of the King of Ireland. Merlin decided to keep their identity secret and announced the group saying,  King Laodegan, we are knights and come to offer you our services in your wars.  The King of Carmalide welcomed the knights and showed his gratitude for their generous and noble offer. A few days after this, suddenly2 the enemy attacked the city. Cleodalis, the King s general, organised the royal forces. Arthur and his companions helped him. Arthur fought bravely and killed many enemies. Guenevere was watching from the city walls. She noticed Arthur s courage and began to feel a strong interest in him. She was worried for the handsome young stranger when he had to face Caulang, an incredibly tall giant. But when Arthur cut the monster s neck, Guenevere exclaimed:  Oh, I want that man as my husband!  Thanks to Arthur and his knights  help, the enemies were soon defeated and left the Kingdom of Carmalide. King Laodegan organized a magnificent celebration to thank the knights. He wanted to know their names and rank3. Like his daughter, he admired their leader s courage and thought,  That man must become Guenevere s husband.  1. sovereign: king or queen. 2. suddenly: quickly and unexpectedly. 3. rank: position or social level. 17 u m
