King Arthur Sir Lancelot of the Lake When Lancelot was little more than a baby, his father, King Ban of Brittany and Helen, his mother, had to leave their land because a wicked1 and powerful enemy was conquering all their towns and castles. During the escape the King fell ill2. When they arrived near a lake, King Ban said,  Dear Helen, the loss3 of my land is too heavy to me and I feel I am dying.  Helen left her child near the lake because she wanted to help her husband; but she could do very little: he died in an instant. When the desperate Helen came back to her child, she saw the little Lancelot in the arms of a woman. She just had the time to ask,  Who are you?  and the woman threw herself into the lake with the child. This woman was Viviane, the Lady of the Lake, Merlin s loved woman. Her palace was in the middle of the lake, where she lived with a splendid court of knights and damsels. Lancelot grew up and was educated at the court of this fairy4; for this reason he was called Lancelot of the Lake. When Lancelot was eighteen, Viviane took him to the court of Arthur and said,  My Lord, here is a brave young man, the son of King Ban. Please, give him the honour of becoming one of your Knights.  In all tournaments Sir Lancelot of the Lake appeared the strongest and bravest of all the knights. So thanks to his courage, his skill in arms and his kindness, he was made a Knight of the Round Table. Also Queen Guenevere s heart was touched 1. wicked: very bad. 2. fell (fall-fell-fallen) ill: became ill. 3. loss: when you no longer have something. 4. fairy: an imaginary small creature with magical powers, usually represented with wings. 27 u m
