King Arthur King Arthur and Sir Lancelot at War When the quest for the Holy Grail finished and all the surviving Knights were back at the Round Table, there was great joy in the Court. King Arthur and Queen Guenevere were especially glad about the return of Sir Lancelot and Sir Bohort. The Queen was so kind to Lancelot that he forgot his promise and started to court her again. Many Knights spoke of it, especially one called Sir Agrivain. One day, when Sir Lancelot was absent, he said to the other Knights,  Why aren t we all ashamed1 to see and to know that a noble Knight as King Arthur is dishonoured by the conduct of Sir Lancelot and the Queen?  But all the Knights, except Sir Modred, preferred not to discuss this question. But Sir Agrivain took his decision,  I will reveal everything to the King!  The King heard his Knight s confession with great sorrow but couldn t believe him without proof. So Sir Agrivain and Sir Modred prepared a plot2 to entrap3 Sir Lancelot and the Queen. But Sir Lancelot heard them coming, killed Sir Agrivain and wounded Sir Modred. Then he escaped from Camelot. Some of his faithful friends followed him, others remained to bring him news from the Court. Sir Lancelot s flight4 convinced Arthur of his and Guenevere s guilt5. In those days the law established that all women guilty of that crime had to be burnt. This was Queen Guenevere s destiny. So King Arthur called all his Knights and said to Sir Gawain, 1. ashamed: feeling embarrassed and guilty. 2. plot: a secret plan to do something bad or illegal. 3. entrap: make it impossible (for Sir Lancelot) to escape. 4. flight: act of escaping, going away. 5. guilt: the fact of having done something wrong, bad. 71 u m
