R.L.TheStevenson Stockade A Chapter 6 The doctor continues the story. After the men had left, the captain, the squire and I went to the cabin to discuss what to do. We could fight and take the ship. But there was no wind so it wasn t possible to sail. Then Hunter came with the news that Jim had gone ashore, too. We had no doubts about him, but we were very worried about his safety. We learnt from the map that there was a stockade in the woods, not too far from the coast. It was decided that Hunter and I would go and explore it. Ashore, two men were guarding the pirates  boats near the mouth of a river. When they saw us approaching, they seemed surprised but they didn t do anything. We landed a little farther away, behind some sand dunes. Then we went in search of the stockade. We found it in the place marked on the map, on a little hill. It was made of a log-house with holes on each side for guns. All around it there was a wide open space surrounded by a high wooden fence. There was also a spring of fresh water. If we took food and ammunition there, we could defend ourselves from the pirates. Suddenly the cry of a man dying rang out over the island. My first thought was  Jim Hawkins is dead . I was very sad but there was nothing we could do. We went back to the ship. Everybody seemed nervous. The men had heard the cry, too, and the captain told us that one of them had almost fainted. We worked out a plan. We put old Redruth with three or four muskets1 in the gallery which went from the deck to the cabin astern. Joyce and I started loading2 1. musket: a type of gun used in the past. 2. loading: putting a large quantity of something into a container or a vehicle. 61 u m q m
