the most famous picaresque novels are Defoe s Moll Flanders (1722) and Henry Fielding s Tom Jones (1749). In Gulliver s Travels (1726), by Jonathan Swift, the account of imaginary voyages turns into a vehicle for political satire. From the 18th century on, travel reports became extremely fashionable. Many of them were the result of the so-called  Grand Tour , a journey through Europe which was considered the necessary complement to the education of upper class young people.These reports   in the form of diaries, letters or notes   became a way to express observations and reflections on the countries visited and on mankind in general. They include The Traveller or a Prospect of Society (1764), by Oliver Goldsmith; Travels through France and Italy (1766) by Tobias Smollett and A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy (1768) by Laurence Sterne, which is actually a parody of this fashionable genre. We must also remember Goethe s Italienische Reise (A Voyage to Italy), published between 1816 and 1829; and Stendhal s Mémoires d un touriste (1838). Lord Byron s Childe Harold s Pilgrimage (1812-1818) is not only a poetical account of his  Grand Tour  through Europe, the Balkans and the Middle East. It is a passionate record of the emotions and feelings aroused9 in the protagonist by the world around him. Childe Harold will become the prototype of the Romantic hero. Finally, the sea-voyage as an allegory of man s life is the subject of a masterpiece of Romantic poetry: Coleridge s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1798), a parable of sin, expiation and salvation. But Herman Melville s Moby Dick (1851) can be read allegorically, too. In this novel, the hunt for the white whale has been seen as a representation of man s fight against the evil forces in the world and a way to give a reason for his existence. The 20th century In the 20th century, the journey tends increasingly to appear as a voyage into the inner self and a discovery of the deepest and most obscure aspects of all human beings. Conrad s Heart of Darkness (1902) reveals the dark side of the Western colonization in Africa. Forster s A Room with a View (1908) explores the contradictions of Victorian morality. A Passage to India (1924), also by Forster, deals with questions of rule and race in the British colonies. But in all these novels the contact with the primitive, strange10 and exotic causes the loss of the protagonists  certainties and leads them to a radical change in the perception of their own identity. The 20th century representation of Ulysses, given by James Joyce, is that of a man who wanders about Dublin, on one single day. Like Homer s Odyssey, Joyce s Ulysses (1922) is the story of a journey.
