the dark atmosphere in which the story is set through the character s own feeling of terror. Some of these stories, that Poe called Tales of Arabesque and Grotesque, are: The Pit and the Pendulum, The Black Cat, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Masque of the Red Death (all of which you can read in this book), and The Oval Portrait. In these tales he analyzes the distortions6 of human minds and describes characters who have lost their mental stability7. The characters are always vague8, indefinite and mysterious; also, they are quite similar to each other in all the stories. Poe also shows the power of our subconscious9 and its influence on our behaviour and the decisions we make. The events in these stories often appear supernatural and are connected to strange deaths. The plot, which is usually very limited, is built around horrifying situations. Many of Poe s detective and horror stories have ben turned into films or have H. P.
