The evil eye can affect different people in different ways: it depends not only on the power of the eye itself, but also on the different balance7 between the good and the evil sides that form the human beings. In The Tell-Tale Heart the consequence is a sort of deep illness that affects8 the character psychologically. The old man s evil eye causes an irrational fear, a phobia, that overcomes the character s will and pushes him to become violent and commit murder. In most cultures, the first victims are babies and young children. In a folk tale from eastern European countries, the main character, a father, decides to blind9 himself because of his evil eye. He fears he could hurt his own children with it. People have to do something to contrast the effects of the evil eye, so the use of amulets10 or particular formulae11 is very common. Some European and American Jews, for example, say  No evil eye!  in Jiddish after someone has received good news or has been praised. In Greece and Turkey, and in general in the eastern Mediterranean countries, where blue eyes are not very common, blue-eyed people are thought to curse others. That is why amulets against the evil eye take the form of blue eyes. In the Muslim Mediterranean countries people paint the blinds12 of their windows blue. The children and animals wear blue beads13 and some people wear an amulet, with the shape of a hand, called  the hand of Fatima  (Mohammed s daughter), to be protected from the evil eye. 7. balance: same weight. 8. affects: influences. 9. blind: seriously damage the eyes so that they cannot see any more. 10. amulet: object that protects you against bad luck. 11. formulae: special sentences said to obtain a result. 12. blind: protection to the window to prevent light from entering the house. 13. bead: roundish piece od plastic, glass, etc. Amulets on sale in Greece. 66
