Oliver Oliver in Twist London Chapter 3 It was early in the morning when Oliver left. He was walking on the main road when he saw a sign:  London   70 miles . Oliver remembered that some men at the workhouse believed London was a good place for brave boys and this made him feel better.  I ll go to London and I will certainly find work. Then, London is so big! Nobody, not even Mr Bumble, will find me there!  he thought. He started walking towards London but, after some time, he realized1 how far it was. He had only a piece of bread and a penny, but he tried not to worry and continued walking. That day he walked twenty miles and ate only his piece of bread. When it got dark, he stopped in a field. He was hungry, cold and felt sad but he was so tired that he soon fell asleep2. The next morning he bought a little bread with his penny and walked twelve miles. The following day he was so hungry that he decided to beg3 for money but he soon realized that it was not a good idea. Some villagers told him that begging was illegal and they could send him to prison; other people shouted at him because they thought he was a lazy boy; some farmers and pub owners chased4 him because they thought he was a thief. Some people on a coach5 called him and promised him a penny. So Oliver started running after them but they only laughed at him and left him exhausted. Only an old woman felt pity and gave him something to eat. On the seventh day, Oliver arrived near London. His feet were bleeding6 and he was exhausted. He was sitting at the side of the road when he noticed a boy. He was about Oliver s age, 1. 2. 3. 4. realized: understood. fell (fall-fell-fallen) asleep: began to sleep. beg: ask for money. chased: followed quickly. 5. coach: old-fashioned vehicle that is pulled by horses. 6. bleeding: losing blood. 25 8 9
