Oliver Twist The end of all mysteries Chapter 8 Sunday came at last. It was eleven. Nancy was thinking how to get out. Sikes and Fagin were both present and were discussing some business. Nancy stood up and put on her coat.  Where are you going at this time of the night?  asked Sikes. After so many years with the gang, Nancy was good at telling lies but it was difficult to hide her fear. She knew that she was running a great risk.  I don t feel well. I want a breath of air.  Sikes locked the door. Nancy started screaming and fighting but all was useless. Fagin followed the scene. He thought that Nancy was tired of Sikes  violent manners and that she probably had a new friend. He even liked the idea because he was tired of Bill, too, and he thought he could use Nancy to send him away forever. So he decided to watch her. The following Sunday, Sikes was away, so Nancy went out and quickly walked through the dark streets towards London Bridge. It was a misty, cold night. She didn t know that a boy, sent by Fagin, was following her. The boy saw Nancy talking to an old, grey-haired gentleman and a young woman.  I couldn t come last Sunday,  she said  I was kept by force.  Then they talked about Monks and Nancy told them how to reach him. Before leaving, she looked at them with a sad expression on her face.  I m so frightened tonight. I feel this is the last time we will meet.  The man tried to convince her to go with them but Nancy repeated many times it was too late for her to change her life and she didn t want to betray Sikes, Fagin and the boys of the gang. Then she left them and went back home quickly. The boy ran to Fagin s house and told him every single word of the conversation between Nancy and the two other people. Fagin listened carefully and became pale. He was full of hatred for Nancy and the two strangers. A little later Sikes arrived and 77 27
