 Wuthering Heights is considered to be one of the greatest works in English literature because of its plot, the gallery of characters which spans two generations, the Gothic element and its sentimental and psychological aspects.
 It is the disturbing story of an impossible love from the first childish games on the Yorkshire moors up to Cathy’s death and beyond, in a desperate pursuit of love which transcends life. Grudges, wickedness and cruel revenge, together with bursts of human generosity and passion, all take place inside or not far away from the main character of this novel: the house, i.e. “Wuthering Heights”.
 The numerous in-depth analyses are about the Brontë sisters, the setting of the story, the writer’s poetry, music and works of art inspired by Wuthering Heights, its adaptations for cinema, and the Gothic element present in the novel.

Peter Bowker Jacques Rivette In 1992, Peter Kosminsky directed Ralph Fiennes as the  tortured, twisted5 Heathcliff , and Juliette Binoche as the  wild, slip of a girl6 Cathy . Of all the films whose prints still exist, this keeps most faithfully to the book and perhaps also to Emily s spirit. Inspiration can lead to all kinds of things, and in 2003, MTV released a rather unusual musical version, set in the 21st century in southern California, starring Erika Christensen and Mike Vogel. There was talk in 2006 of a new Hollywood adaptation being developed starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, but there has been no more news of this. The writer Peter Bowker was commissioned to write a remake7 by the British TV channel ITV, broadcast on TV in 2008, not to be missed for lovers of Emily s wild imagination which produced such a beautiful story. In 2004, the Italian TV channel RAI produced a successful screen adaptation for television starring Alessio Boni and Anita Capriolo, directed by Fabrizio Costa. It was filmed on location in the Czech Republic for ten weeks, apart from one day s shooting in Cornwall. Within the film world there is a rather strange superstition about Wuthering Heights, which is one of the reasons why there have not been more screen adaptations of the book. There is the idea that something of the story s tragic destiny comes out of the pages and causes difficulties and problems in the production, so that actors and crew8 and directors feel worried and troubled. When asked about this, Jacques Rivette, the French director of Hurlevent, admitted that this had actually happened during the filming, but of course, it could simply be due to the fact that it is a very complicated and difficult story to adapt well on screen. Whatever the real answer is, this seems to be further proof of the extraordinary power and passion which is to be found inside the pages of Wuthering Heights. 5. twisted: not normal, strange in an unpleasant way. 6. slip of a girl: a small, thin, young girl. 7. remake: a new version of an old film. 8. crew: the technicians who work on the set of a film. 62
