THE BOOK THE FILM Title The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. The Wizard of Oz by Victor Fleming. Interpretation Dorothy s adventures in Oz are like reality. The experience in the Land of Oz is like a dream. Dorothy She is courageous. She saves her friends after the Wicked Witch is dead. She is very aggressive towards the Wicked Witch. She throws the water at the Wicked Witch and kills her. Dorothy is not very courageous. When she is the prisoner of the Wicked Witch, she is desperate. She needs her friends help. Visual changes Colours are symbols. The SILVER shoes walk on the GOLD road to the city of GREEN (the Emerald City). It is the Depression era in the U.S.A., when Baum writes his book. People are poor. The green represents the American dollar. Silver and gold are very precious metals. Dorothy s shoes are RUBY1 slippers2 to contrast the YELLOW Brick Road of the Technicolor film. Ruby and yellow are bright colours. They make the spectators happy. 1. ruby: a dark red colour. 2. slippers: soft shoes that you usually wear in the house. 70
