 Dubliners is a collection of fifteen short stories started by a very young James Joyce in 1904 and finished in 1907.
 A feeling of stagnation pervades Dublin and its inhabitants, whose lives are dominated by frustration, inertia, alcoholism, poverty and conformity. The resulting picture is one of afflicted humanity, trying to escape from its destiny but always failing.
 Seven stories have been chosen which represent the four phases of life singled out by Joyce: childhood (An Encounter, Araby), adolescence (Eveline, The Boarding House), maturity (A Little Cloud, A Painful Case), public life (A Mother).
 The book is enriched by an introduction to Dubliners and several inserts on Joyce and the Irish literary situation of the time.

 Dubliners è una raccolta di racconti iniziati da Joyce poco più che ventenne. I protagonisti sono persone comuni di Dublino viste nelle loro quotidianità. Il filo conduttore dei racconti è costituito da due elementi: la paralisi e la fuga, volta al tentativo – sempre fallimentare – di liberarsi dall’immobilismo della realtà irlandese.
 In questa antologia sono stati scelti sette racconti che rappresentano le quattro fasi della vita individuate da Joyce: l’infanzia, l’adolescenza, la maturità, la vita pubblica.

Dubliners Eveline Story 3 E Eveline sat at the window watching the evening invade the avenue. She was tired. There were few people outside. A man passed on his way home. He lived in one of the new red houses at the end of the road. Once there used to be a field there. Then a man from Belfast had bought it and built houses, not like their little brown houses but bright brick ones with shining roofs. All the children of the avenue used to play in the field: the Devines, the Waters, the Dunns, little Keogh the cripple1, she and her brothers and sisters. Ernest, however, never played: he was too grown-up. Her father used often to hunt them in2 out of the field with his stick, but usually little Keogh stood guard3 and called out when he saw him coming. They were happy then. Her father was not so bad and, besides, her mother was still alive. That was a long time ago. Now she and her brothers and sisters were all grown-up; her mother was dead and the Waters had gone back to England. Everything changes. And she, too, was going to go away like the others, to leave her home. Home! She looked round the room, reviewing all the familiar objects which she had dusted once a week for so many years, wondering where on earth the dust came from. She had never found out the name of the priest whose yellowing photograph hung on the wall above the broken harmonium4 beside the coloured print of the promises made to Blessed Margaret Mary Alacoque5. She had consented to go away, to leave her home. Was that wise? She tried to weigh6 each side of the question.
