 Dubliners is a collection of fifteen short stories started by a very young James Joyce in 1904 and finished in 1907.
 A feeling of stagnation pervades Dublin and its inhabitants, whose lives are dominated by frustration, inertia, alcoholism, poverty and conformity. The resulting picture is one of afflicted humanity, trying to escape from its destiny but always failing.
 Seven stories have been chosen which represent the four phases of life singled out by Joyce: childhood (An Encounter, Araby), adolescence (Eveline, The Boarding House), maturity (A Little Cloud, A Painful Case), public life (A Mother).
 The book is enriched by an introduction to Dubliners and several inserts on Joyce and the Irish literary situation of the time.

 Dubliners è una raccolta di racconti iniziati da Joyce poco più che ventenne. I protagonisti sono persone comuni di Dublino viste nelle loro quotidianità. Il filo conduttore dei racconti è costituito da due elementi: la paralisi e la fuga, volta al tentativo – sempre fallimentare – di liberarsi dall’immobilismo della realtà irlandese.
 In questa antologia sono stati scelti sette racconti che rappresentano le quattro fasi della vita individuate da Joyce: l’infanzia, l’adolescenza, la maturità, la vita pubblica.

Dubliners A Painful Case Story 6 M m Mr James Duffy lived in Chapelizod because he wished to live u as far as possible from the city of which he was a citizen and because he found all the other suburbs of Dublin mean, modern and pretentious. He lived in an old sombre1 house and from his window he could look into the disused distillery or upwards along the bank of the shallow river Liffey. There were no pictures on q the wall of his room. He had bought all the furniture himself: a black iron bedstead2, an iron washstand3, above which a little handmirror was hung, four cane4 chairs, a clothes rack5, a square desk and a white bookcase. Wordsworth s complete works stood on its lowest shelf. Writing materials were always on the desk, such as sharpened pencils and sheets of paper on which he wrote a sentence from time to time. A manuscript translation of Hauptmann s Michael Kramer6 also lay there. Mr Duffy hated anything which indicated mental or physical disorder. A medieval doctor would have called him saturnine7. His face, which carried all the weight of his years, was of the brown colour of Dublin streets. He had a long and rather large head with dry black hair, a tawny8 moustache and tawny eyebrows. The expression of his mouth and his cheekbones gave him a harsh look. But there was no harshness in his eyes, often looking for something in the world that could involve him and often disappointed. He had been a cashier of a private bank in Baggot Street for many years. Every morning he came to his office from Chapelizod by tram.
