Is he/she married? What is his/her official residence? How long has he/she held office? Who takes executive decisions in your country? Have you ever seen this film? If so, did you like it? Why? Why not? A synopsis The film is set almost entirely in London during five frantic weeks before Christmas and it tells the tale of ten more or less related love stories. The central character is the new Prime Minister David (Hugh Grant), a bachelor who cannot express his growing feelings for his new secretary, Natalie. Meanwhile the Prime Minister's elder sister, Karen, slowly realises that her husband has an affair with one of his office workers. Karen s friend, Daniel, is a recently widowed writer; his 11-year-old son asks him for love advice about a girl he has a crush on. Jamie is another writer who leaves his cheating girlfriend and travels to France to write a novel. There he falls in love again with his Portuguese maid, Aurelia. There are also secondary characters, including a burned-out middle-aged rock star named Billy Mack, who is the main connection between all stories. CURIOSITY CORNER HUGH GRANT TOPS PRIME MINISTER POLL Production: USA 2003 Director: Richard Curtis Starring: Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightely, Martine McCutcheon, Bill Nighy, Rowan Atkinson, Billy Bob Thornton, Thomas Sangster The film is a romantic comedy, but it also refers to political life and actually contains a lot of political scenes: from the Prime Minister s settling into his new residence at 10, Downing Street to the Cabinet's meeting, from the talks with the American President to the press conference. May 3, 2005 British actor Hugh Grant s role as Prime Minister in romantic comedy Love Actually was so convincing, 1,800 Britons have voted for him to replace premier Tony Blair in a new survey. DVD company Silverscreen asked consumers which actor should take Blair s place as the nation s political figurehead, if he was running in this year s (2005) elections, and Grant claimed the fictional position. Harrison Ford s part as US President in movie Air Force One earned him second place in the poll, followed by Martin Sheen, who also played an American President in hit TV series The West Wing . Silverscreen spokesman Aziz Tarafder says, We chose the greatest movie and TV politicians of the last 20 years and asked people who they really wanted as Prime Minister. Some people say politicians are actors and that Parliament is one big theatre but our survey suggests that this is obviously not such a bad thing . from www.femalefirst.co.uk
