The Monster. Scotland at first glance Scotland is everything you can imagine: whisky, golf, romance of the clans and a lot of castles and historic sites. The Highlands area is one of the last wildernesses in Europe. Lots of people go there for its beautiful mountains, its lochs and, of course, for Nessie. Scotland is about half the size (1) England, and about two-thirds of the country consists of mountains and moorland. Geographically, it can be divided (2) three areas: the Southern Uplands, the Central Lowlands, and the Northern Highlands and Islands. (3) Southern Uplands are the fertile plains and hills bordering England; the Central Lowlands (4) from Edinburgh to Glasgow and contain the industrial belt and most of the population, while the Highlands are (5) ranges of sandstone and granite.
