A Christmas The Third SpiritCarol Chapter 4 The Ghost silently came nearer. When it arrived, Scrooge went on his knees: he was frightened of the Spirit; it was so gloomy and mysterious. It wore a black garment1 that hid its head, its face, and its shape, everything. Only its hand was visible against the dark night. Its forefinger2 was pointing forward3. Scrooge imagined that it was very tall and its mysterious presence filled him with terror. He couldn t think of anything else, because the Spirit didn t speak or move.  You are the Ghost of Christmas Future,  said Scrooge. The Spirit didn t answer, but pointed its finger.  You are going to show me things that have not happened yet but will happen in the future. Is that right, Spirit?  The Spirit moved its head very little. Scrooge was now really terrified. He thought that he knew ghosts now, but this one was really scary4.  Ghost of the Future! I know that you are here for a good reason, so I will come with you, but let s go, please! The night is short, and time is precious. I want to go back and live as a different man. Let s go!  said Scrooge. The Spirit pointed its terrifying finger in front of them and moved, and Scrooge followed it. Soon they were in the city, among the businessmen who ran here and there, counting the money in their pockets, and always looking at their watches. Scrooge knew all of them. The Spirit stopped next to a group of men and pointed its finger. Scrooge went near them and listened.  I don t know much. I only know he died last night,  said a fat man. 1. garment: piece of clothing. 3. forward: towards the direction that is in front of you. 4. scary: frightening. 2. forefinger: 45
