Sadly, the summer house6, where he wrote The Ambassadors and The Golden Bowl, was destroyed during the Second LAMB HOUSE World War. Here he dictated his stories to his secretary. In 1897, due to problems with his wrists, which made it difficult for him to hold a pen, he bought one of the first typewriters. He never learned to type himself, but from then on, he employed someone to do it for him. Inside, much of the furniture remains the same, and on the walls are the portraits of him from youth to old age, by John Singer Sargent.You can also see the bust of an Italian count by the young sculptor Henrik Anderson, which Henry treasured7. Over the mantelpiece is another of his precious possessions, a piece of needlework8 by Constance Fenimore Woolson, Henry s friend, who committed suicide in 1894. Upstairs is the bedroom where guests such as Rudyard Kipling and H.G. Wells slept when they visited him. Henry moved there in 1898. He became very happy in his refuge, and loved having friends to stay so that he could show them his house and the delightful countryside around it. Perhaps writing The Turn of the Screw had sent his own  demons  away for a while. Bly in Essex, reminds us very much of Rye in Sussex, and the description of it is not unlike the house Henry was about to move into. Lamb House is full of echoes from the past, and is definitely worth a visit, whether you feel Henry s dignified ghost or not. he loved it and considered very valuable. 8. needlework: something sewn by hand for decoration. 6. summer house: a small building in a garden for sitting in good weather. 7. treasured: kept with great care because Lamb House today 20
