Perhaps he was trying to show her that he did like her, even though he wanted to go away. She sat listening, looking at him. He played beautifully. He was the most extraordinary little boy, he had a special kind of dignity which made him look older than his age. What horrible evil could have corrupted his innocence? Her thoughts and his music charmed her into a kind of dream so that for a moment she forgot her troubles.  Flora!  She suddenly came back to reality.  Where s Flora?  She was so angry with herself. She never let either of the children out of her sight.  Miles, where s Flora?  she repeated. He stopped his playing.  How should I know?  and began to sing cheerfully to himself. The governess rushed to find Mrs Grose. Flora would surely be with her. She wasn t.  Tell all the servants to go and look for her immediately, Mrs Grose.   Don t worry, Miss.
