module 2 LISTENING COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING MATERIALS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS Dr Paul Wallace of Newcastle Polytechnic gives a lecture about materials and their applications. One of the students welcomes Dr Wallace and asks him some questions. While listening to the recording, put the questions and answers in the right order. 8th March Dr PAUL WALLACE Newcastle Polytechnic ENGINEERING MATERIALS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS 9.15 a.m. AUDITORIUM Applications of smart materials technology can be found on F-117A Nighthawk a. Dr Wallace: Sure! Smart materials respond to environmental stimuli with particular changes in some variables and have several applications: space, aerospace, civil engineering, domestic products! b. Dr Wallace: Smart materials can change either their properties, their structure or composition or their functions in response to changes in temperature, moisture, ph, electric or magnetic fields. c. Student: Good morning Dr Wallace. It s so nice of you to come. d. Dr Wallace: Yes, they are! As well as magneto/electro-rheostatic materials and shape memory alloys. Piezoelectric materials undergo a rapid change in shape in response to an electric field; MR and ER materials are fluids which can dramatically alter their viscosity if exposed to a magnetic or electric field while shape memory alloys change shape in response to heat or cold. e. Student: Do you think we could start by talking about smart materials? f. Dr Wallace: Good morning everybody! It was very kind of you to invite me! g. Student: Sorry, but I don t understand what you mean by changes in variables. h. Student: We have often heard of piezoelectric materials, are they smart ones?
