E X T E N S I O N FILMS, GAMES AND MUSIC INSPIRED BY LOVECRAFT S WORKS FILMS From the 1950s onwards, Lovecraftian horror became a sub-genre, and provided the basis for many of the horror films of the 1980s and the 1990s. In 1981, the first of a series of comedy horror films, The Evil Dead, created by Sam Raimi, appeared. It focuses on five college students on holiday in an isolated cabin1 in a wooded2 area. They find an audiotape from which a legion of demons comes out, which then possess the members of the group leading to chaos and confusion. Necronomicon is a 1993 film based on three of Lovecraft s short stories and directed by Christophe Gans. Here Lovecraft himself is a character, played by Jeffrey Combs, who also acted in numerous Lovecraft-related films. The 1997-2003 series Buffy, The Necronomicon Vampire Slayer, by Joss Whedon, have an essentially Lovecraftian background setting, in which the world was once ruled by the demonic Old Ones before they were pushed out by evolution.Their heirs are only vampires and modern demons, human hybrids3 living in a hell dimension. Joss Whedon returned to Lovecraftian themes in the 2012 film Cabin in the Woods. Here, an organization, The Facility, is going to sacrifice five young people in order to placate The Ancient Ones, creatures that once dominated the earth and now live underground.
