Elizabeth I was the Queen of England and Ireland from 1558 until 1603. She was the daughter of King Henry VIII of England and Anne Boleyn, his second wife, and was the last of the Tudor dynasty of monarchs.
 In the early years, Elizabeth’s life was a troubled one. She then ruled with intelligence and hard work and her reign was distinguished by great achievements in the arts, trade, and exploration.

The Invincible A Queen with the HeartQueen of a King Chapter 4 The problem of succession During her rule, Elizabeth was celebrated for her connection to peace, goodness and wisdom. She also displayed a series of emotions. She had an explosive fury. Her vanity and arrogance were never hidden. She held grudges1 and was sometimes offensive to those who served her well. She was greedy2 and accumulated a great deal of wealth and property. But she defended the interests of the nation, which she connected to herself. Because she was very intelligent, her decisions were usually wise. She knew that governing involved performance and she was a good actor. Elizabeth completed the task begun by her Tudor ancestors, the making of a nation. But who could preserve what she had created? Who could take her place after her death? During the first decades of her rule, Elizabeth resisted the pressures to marry. She knew that a Catholic would be unacceptable to the Protestants, a Protestant to the Catholics. A foreigner would be opposed by those afraid of the influence of European powers. And, of course, she certainly did not want to share power with anyone. Though she needed Parliament to impose taxes and assist in the creation of law, Elizabeth s word was final. The men who sat in Parliament could not tell her what to do, even if they feared that disorder might follow her death. They wanted her to marry and have children. They became very worried in 1562 when she fell victim to smallpox3, a disease that scarred4 her face. The pressure on her to marry and produce an heir ended during the second half of her reign. Then, she began to be celebrated as England s Virgin Queen. 1. grudge: feeling of ill will, resentment. 2. greedy: excessively desirous of wealth. 3. smallpox: an extremely infectious disease that causes a fever, spots on the skin, and often death. 4. scar: to leave a mark on the skin after it has healed. 57
