Elizabeth I was the Queen of England and Ireland from 1558 until 1603. She was the daughter of King Henry VIII of England and Anne Boleyn, his second wife, and was the last of the Tudor dynasty of monarchs.
 In the early years, Elizabeth’s life was a troubled one. She then ruled with intelligence and hard work and her reign was distinguished by great achievements in the arts, trade, and exploration.

TheAsInvincible Queen the Century Closes Chapter 5 Home policy The defeat of the Armada increased Elizabeth s popularity but she still faced serious problems. Religion divided the nation. Foreign powers worked against it. And there was resistance to her demands for higher taxes. Elizabeth opposed diversity in religious belief. She was head of the Church of England and expected her subjects to accept its teachings. However, in the final decades of her rule, several subjects began to have different beliefs. She believed they were a threat to the national unity, as were the Catholics, and used her power to punish religious dissenters1 of all kinds. Though the English had defeated the mighty2 Armada, Spain was still powerful. It took another few decades for Spain to become a secondary power. Until then, the hostility of its ruler was a major problem for England. Shortly after the defeat of the Armada, France finally became unified under Henry of Navarre. A unified France was a power that could not be ignored. France had been and would be hostile to English interests. Elizabeth s England, therefore, was often in conflict with Spain and France. Elizabeth had many palaces to maintain. She had thousands of servants to feed and house. She liked expensive jewellery and clothing. A small army protected her. The conflicts with Spain and with other European nations were also costly. In the final decades of her rule, crops3 failed. This led to unrest4 in the nation and resentment over the way she spent the nation s wealth. In the final decades of her rule, Elizabeth showed the signs of age, illness and disease. She was physically and emotionally 1. dissenter: person holding opinions different from those officially held. 2. mighty: possessing great and impressive power or strength. 3. crops: plants that are grown in large quantities, especially as food. 4. unrest: a political situation in which people are angry and likely to protest or fight. 75
