The Time Machine The Time Machine Is Gone! Chapter 3  I stood there for a while meditating on this perfect triumph of Man. Then I decided to go down the hill to find a place where I could sleep. From the top, I immediately recognized the sphinx of white marble and in front of it the little green lawn1 where my time machine was. But looking at the lawn more carefully, I opened my eyes wide and said to myself,  Oh, no! ,  That is the lawn but I can t see the machine! Where is it?  The Time Machine was gone! I started running down the hill like mad. Once I fell headlong and cut my face; as I ran, I kept saying to myself:  They have just moved it a little, pushed it under the bushes2.  I suppose I covered the whole distance from the hill to the little lawn, two miles perhaps, in ten minutes. And I am not a young man. When I reached the lawn, there wasn t a trace of my invention! I felt lost and started running round the sphinx furiously, but I couldn t find the machine. When I was on the little lawn again, I put my hands in my hair in despair. For a little while, I consoled myself imagining the Little People had put the mechanism in some shelter3 for me; but soon I realized it was impossible owing to their physical and intellectual inadequacy. Who had taken my machine, then? I calmed down a bit thinking that nobody could move the machine in time. I had the two levers in my pockets and nobody could use it without them. It had only moved in space. But then, where could it be? Sobbing and anguished4, I went to the great building of stone. The big hall was dark, silent and deserted. I lit a match and found a second big hall covered with cushions on which about twenty of the Little People were sleeping. 1. lawn: an area of ground covered in short grass in a garden or park. 3. shelter: a building designed to give protection from bad weather, danger, or attack. 4. anguished: extremely unhappy. 2. bushes: 35
