TheBack Time HomeMachine at Last Chapter 5  At about eight or nine in the morning, I came to the same place from which I had viewed the world on my arrival. I thought of my hasty1 conclusions of that evening and laughed bitterly at my confidence2. Here was the same beautiful scene, the same rich plants, the same splendid buildings and magnificent ruins, the same silver river running between its fertile banks. The Eloi were moving among the trees in their delightful clothes and some were bathing in exactly the same place where I had saved Weena   Weena... the memory of her gave me a sharp pain. The domes above the wells which led to the Under World rose like spots on the landscape. I understood now what all the beauty of the Upper World people meant: their day was very pleasant, as pleasant as the day of the cattle in the field. Like the cattle, they knew of no enemies and their end was the same. Only those animals which have to face a great variety of needs and dangers have intelligence. Anyway, after the efforts, excitement, terror and deep grief3 of the past days, the peaceful view and the warm sunlight were very pleasant. I was very tired and sleepy, so I lay down on the grass and had a long, refreshing sleep. I woke up just before sunset and came down the hill towards the White Sphinx. I had my bar in one hand and the other hand played with the matches in my pocket. But as I was coming near the Sphinx, I noticed something surprising: the bronze doors were open. I stopped before them, hesitating to enter. Inside there was a small room and in a corner there was the Time Machine!
