Aaron Ciechanover     Biochemistry is the science of life. All our life processes   walking, talking, moving, feeding   are essentially chemical reactions. So biochemistry is actually the chemistry of life, and it s supremely interesting. Aaron Ciechanover (born in 1947) is an Israeli biologist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2004 for characterising the method that cells use to degrade and recycle proteins using ubiquitin, a regulatory protein that has been found in almost all tissues of eukaryotic organisms. WHY STUDY THIS MODULE? In this Module you will explore Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, which are closely related being both chemical sciences and life sciences. Organic compounds   the compounds in which carbon is a central element   are the basis of life: they are what we are made of and are all around us. In addition, many inorganic things often contain organic matter, too. Biochemistry is the application of Chemistry to biological processes and biomolecules (or organic molecules) are the building blocks of the living world.
