 Dalai Lama XIV     Our planet is our house, and we must keep it in order and take care of it if we are genuinely concerned about happiness for ourselves, our children, our friends, and other sentient beings who share this great house with us. But now human use, population, and technology have reached that certain stage where Mother Earth no longer accepts our presence with silence. The 14th Dalai Lama (born 1935) is the spiritual leader of Tibet, called to assume full temporal duties after China s invasion of Tibet in 1950. In 1959, during the brutal suppression of the Tibetan national uprising by Chinese troops, he fled to India, where he currently lives as a refugee. In 1989, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He has travelled the world and has spoken about the environment, non-violence, interreligious harmony and understanding, women s rights, science, economics, universal responsibility and compassion. WHY STUDY THIS MODULE? In this Module you will examine one of the biggest issues of the day: the pollution of the environment by human action. Stopping air, water and land pollution is important for the survival of our planet and for the health and well-being of us all. Saving the world does not need Superman, it just needs all of us to live a sustainable lifestyle. If we add up the actions of millions of individuals, we can get extraordinary strength and can work wonders. Apart from what each of us can do to protect the environment, there is a field of biotechnology which provides new approaches for understanding, managing, preserving and restoring the environment.
