Unit 12 skillS Shape matters! I t is not uncommon to offer some extra beauty services in a hair salon. One of these is make-up. To choose the make-up that best suits the client, a make-up artist must examine the client s face, eye and lip shape. An oval face only needs some blusher on the cheekbones to add definition. A round face will need highlighting the centre of the face, shading the sides and applying blusher on the inner jawbone. The length of an oblong face will be reduced by highlighting the temples, shading the top of the chin and of the forehead. A square face needs a triangle of shader under the cheekbone and blusher on the inner cheekbone. A heart face requires highlighting the jawbone, shading the point of the chin and the sides of the forehead and blusher under the cheekbone. A pear face needs to highlight the forehead by shading the sides of the chin and jawbone and blusher on the whole cheekbone. Eye shapes too can be improved. Small eyes need light coloured shadows to make them appear larger. Round eyes want a light-coloured shadow all over the eyelids and a darker shade on the outer socket line. Protruding eyes need a dark-coloured shadow on the upper eyelids and a highlighter on the brow bone. Deep-set eyes require a light-coloured shadow all over the eyelid and a darker tone above the eye socket. Close-set eyes need a light-coloured shadow on the inner corners and a darker shade on the outer corners. Wide-set eyes need a dark-coloured shadow on the inner corners and a lighter shade on the outer corners. Hooded eyes need the creation of a visible crease to diminish their protruding eyelids. Oriental eyes need to create a half-moon effect from the lash line to the socket line. 2 A lip liner is essential to modify lip shapes before the application of lipstick. Uneven lips must be made symmetrical. Small lips must be extended at the corners of the mouth. Thin lips need to be enlarged all the way around. Thick lower lip and thick upper lip need the application of foundation to mask the natural lip line before creating a new line. The aspect of the nose can be modified, too.
