Unit 4 skillS Before shampooing S hampooing and conditioning are two very important treatments because they prepare the hair for further services and, if well done, they are also a pleasurable experience for the client. First of all, the stylist should examine the client s hair and scalp and decide on the products to use. Different types of hair need different kinds of products: for fine hair there are gentle shampoos and light conditioners; for curly or thick hair there are nourishing shampoos and conditioners; for colour-treated hair there are specific products for chemically treated hair. Before shampooing, the hairdresser must protect the client s clothing using a gown, a towel around the shoulders and a waterproof cape, position the client at the washbasin making sure there are no gaps between the neck and the edge of the basin and test the temperature of the water before wetting the client s hair. Also, the hairdresser should always check if the client is comfortable. The water temperature and flow depend on the quantity of hair and the sensitivity of the scalp of the client, that is why it is important to adapt them to suit the needs of the client s hair. 3 Your boss gives you instructions to prepare the client for the shampoo treatment.
