Unit 6 skillS Perming and straightening A permanent wave, or a perm, is a chemical process that breaks and reforms the bonds of hair. There are two parts to a perm: the physical action of wrapping the hair and the chemical phase. There are many types of perming rods that can be used during the physical action: small and thin, medium size or big and thick depending on the style and length of hair the client wants. The chemical solution used in the perming process is determined, instead, by the client s hair type. Classic alkaline perms are used for stronger, coarser hair and they are applied at room temperature. Acid perms, instead, are used on more delicate or thinner hair and require external heat application. The same process is often used for chemical hair straightening or relaxing. It is a technique that gives hair a smooth and sleek appearance. This process makes use of the same chemical reactions as that of a perm which break bonds in the hair shaft but the hair is combed straight. However, a temporary method for straightening hair is also very common. In this case, hair irons, hot combs and the skill of the stylist can temporarily modify the shape and texture of hair. 3 6.1 1. 2. 3. 4. 4 Listen to the dialogue. Take notes and answer the questions. Correct the false ones. SERI PERM 1. Preparation: Wash the hair with a mild shampoo. Equalise hair porosity with a pre-perm treatment. Section the hair and select appropriate curler size. 2. Application: Wear protective gloves. Apply the perm lotion onto each curler. Allow to develop. 3. Development guidelines: The suggested development times produce optimum results, however, test curls are recommended to determine the final development time. 4. Rinsing and neutralising: When the development time is completed, rinse all curls thoroughly (5-8 minutes). Pour 50 ml of the neutraliser into a non-metallic bowl. Apply 2/3 of the neutraliser to the hair. Leave to develop for 5 minutes. Gently unwind and apply the remaining 1/3 through the hair; allow to develop for a further 5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. The stylist must mix the neutraliser into a metallic bowl. The neutraliser must be applied in two steps. The neutraliser development time is 5+5 minutes. F
