L’argomento
 On Beauty è rivolto agli studenti iscritti ai percorsi di istruzione e formazione professionale e ai percorsi di qualifica e diploma professionale nel settore dei servizi, indirizzo di Estetica, e, più in generale, a chi opera nel settore, in quanto finalizzato all’acquisizione di competenze linguistiche specifiche del settore.
 
 Grazie alla ricchezza del materiale proposto, On Beauty – concepito per promuovere un apprendimento attivo basato sui contenuti (contentbased learning) – offre la possibilità di scegliere gli argomenti sia in base ai programmi delle materie di indirizzo, sia in base al livello di competenza linguistica degli studenti.
 
 I brani, autentici o appositamente pensati per il profilo di apprendente a cui il corso è indirizzato, sono tratti da fonti diverse: giornali e riviste, libri e manuali, materiale promozionale e siti web.
 
 La struttura dell’opera
 Il testo si articola in 4 sezioni:
 1. Student’s book – 13 unità organizzate intorno ad un unico nucleo tematico e con la seguente struttura:
 • Vocabulary: lessico specifico dell’unità corredato da immagini ed esercizi e con la traduzione dei termini.
 • Skills: brani riguardanti aspetti specifici della professione corredati di glossario, seguiti da attività di comprensione, scrittura, ascolto e dialoghi.
 • Communication: attività di Listening, Speaking, Writing, Role play, Real-life task legate alla fraseologia di carattere professionale proposta.
 
 2. Vocabulary bank – sezione di riferimento lessicale con termini specifici del settore divisi per categorie logiche e per unità.
 
 3. Workbook – eserciziario, per consolidare i contenuti e la lingua appresi nel corso, diviso nelle sezioni di Vocabulary, Skills, Communication e Translation.
 
 4. Grammar – ampia sezione che riprende tutta la grammatica di livello A2/B1 con schemi semplici ma completi e che la consolida e potenzia con numerosi esercizi in contesto.

Unit 12 skillS Consultation and skin testing B efore you perform eyebrow and eyelash treatments, it is necessary to follow some health and safety procedures and to carry out a thorough consultation with your client. To agree on a treatment plan at the consultation, you need to discuss your client s expectations, assess 3 their facial characteristics and find out about any contraindications they may have. All eye treatments   lash and brow tint, eyelash extensions or application of false lashes   require a patch test (skin sensitivity test) 24-48 hours before the treatment date to prevent an allergic reaction around the sensitive eye area. After cleansing the area, you apply a small quantity of tint or of lash adhesive either inside the elbow or behind the ear and leave it on for a day or two. If no reaction appears on the skin, you can continue with the treatment. If the skin appears red, irritated, inflamed or swollen, the treatment cannot be done. Always record the test results on your client s record card. It is very important to sterilize all tools and equipment and use disposable applicators when possible to maximize safety and prevent cross-contamination. LASH AND BROW skillS Eyebrow shaping and thickening E yebrow shaping defines the face and can make you look a lot younger. When shaping eyebrows, consider your client s expectations, their face, brow and eye shape, and their age. Also, consider fashion trends, especially with your younger clientele. Sometimes your clients  natural brow line does not allow to create the look they desire so you should advise them on what shape would best suit their face and maximize their good features. These are the steps to follow:   clean the eyebrow area;   brush the brows and measure them with an orangewood stick;   warm the area with hot towels to open the pores;   stretch the skin and tweeze the unwanted hair in the direction of hair growth until you have achieved the desired shape;   apply a cold compress and/or a lotion to soothe the area;   draw small hairs throughout the brow with defining pencils or use brow powders to create the illusion of thicker eyebrows.
