3 Below are titles of sections from an article on what universities don t tell you in their prospectus. Match the title to the correct paragraph. There are two extra ones. a. Speak to People Who Have Left b. Confirm if You Can Specialise e. Will the University Help you if you Need it During Your Time There? c. Enquire About Your Contact Hours f. Look at the University s Future Plans d. Look Up the Crime Rate g. Take Note of Course Feedback 1. Try to speak to people who have already graduated from the university. Everyone currently there tends to be really stressed out, so they are more likely to give you horror stories about workload and library seating and so on, but it s the same everywhere. Once you graduate, you re more able to look back and remember the things you enjoyed and the things you didn t, plus all the things that were unique to your uni. 2. Ask about the services available, such as mentalhealth support and how easy it is to speak to lecturers or tutors if you re stuck with a problem. Most universities offer career coaching and practice jobinterview sessions, but they can also offer free counselling services, confidential addiction awareness training and help, budgeting lessons and financial advice, digital skills training and English language development. 3. Ask if any big renovation projects are due to take place during your time there. When I was at university, they completely remodelled the centre of LISTENING 4 campus and the library, meaning that from the second year to fourth, we had a half-size library and building work every day. Not good at a campus uni. 4. It sounds obvious, but nobody I knew checked how safe it was where they were going to be and nearly everyone had a break-in at their student flat at some point. You should also check the insurance policy for your student halls, because sometimes they don t have contents insurance and if a robbery takes place, students are liable. You can find this out by contacting the university s accommodation team. 5. Read what students from previous years have to say about their study programme and see whether it was acted upon it gives you a good idea of how responsive staff are and whether the course has been updated to suit student needs. You can do this by searching the relevant department pages of the university.
