E X T E N S I O N APPENDIX: THE PRINCIPLES OF NEWSPEAK At the end of the text, Orwell included an appendix on the principles of Newspeak. Here is a short summary. Newspeak is the official language of Oceania and has been created to meet the needs of Ingsoc. The language is meant to finally substitute Oldspeak by the year 2050. Its purpose is to provide an adequate form of expression to the philosophy of the Party but in particular to make all other forms of thought impossible. It has been conceived1 so that any thought that is different from the principles of the Party is literally unthinkable. This is done by inventing new words, but mainly by eliminating undesirable words or restricting their meaning. Reduction of vocabulary is the final objective because Newspeak is intended to diminish the range of thought. Newspeak is founded on the English language, but it will be impossible for an Oldspeaker to understand it when it reaches completion. Newspeak words are divided into three classes with the same grammar rules applying to all three. The A vocabulary consists of the words needed for the business of everyday life.Their number is limited, and their meanings are very rigidly defined: all ambiguities2 and shades3 of meaning have been eliminated. 1. conceive: to invent a plan or an idea. 2. ambiguity: the fact of something having more than one possible meaning and thus possibly causing confusion. 3. shade: type or degree. 115
