 A great classic of American literature. Through the rise and fall of a fascinating young man, the novel shows the decadence of the “Jazz Age” America of the 1920s.
 Both tragic, romantic hero and criminal, Gatsby believes that money is the key to reach success and happiness, but above all to make his impossible dream of love come true. Despite his faults, he is passionate and sincere, while the other characters move through life superficially, irresponsibly and seem incapable of real feelings.
 In this story, Fitzgerald presents us with all the contradictions of the period: the thoughtless way of living of the prosperous classes in the 1920s, the poverty of the lower classes and the illusory quality of the “American Dream”.

 Attraverso l’ascesa e la caduta di un affascinante giovane, il romanzo tratta la decadenza dell’Età del Jazz nell’America degli Anni ’20.
 Allo stesso tempo eroe tragico/romantico e criminale, Gatsby crede che il denaro sia la chiave per il successo e la felicità, ma soprattutto per rendere reale il suo impossibile sogno d’amore.
 Con questa storia, Fitzgerald ci mostra tutte le contraddizioni del periodo: l’avventatezza delle classi più agiate, la povertà delle classi più basse e la qualità illusoria del cosiddetto sogno americano.

The AGreat Gatsby Reunion 1 Chapter 3 On that same afternoon I had tea with Jordan Baker at the Plaza Hotel and there she told me this surprising story.  Well, it was 1917,  she began,  and I was walking in Louisville, the town where Daisy and I grew up, when I heard her call my name. She was eighteen at the time, two years older than me, and was by far the most popular girl in town. She always dressed in white and had a little white car. The telephone rang all day long in her big house   the biggest one in town, actually   because a lot of young officers were always calling to ask her out. When I met her that morning, she was sitting in her car with a lieutenant I d never seen before. I was going to the Red Cross to help, and she was supposed to go, too, but she asked me to tell them that she couldn t go. While she was speaking, the officer was looking at her in a way that every girl would love to be looked at. His name was Jay Gatsby. That was 1917. By the next year, I had a few boyfriends myself, I began to play in tournaments, and I didn t see Daisy very often. However, I heard that her mother had found her packing her suitcase to go to New York to say good-bye to a soldier who was leaving for Europe. She was sad for a while and stopped going around with young officers. The following fall, however, she was happy again, happy as ever, and in June she married Tom Buchanan of Chicago. The wedding was magnificent, a lot of people were invited, and I was a bridesmaid2.
