 A quiet country village is upset by the arrival of a stranger who is always covered from head to foot – he wears a large hat, a scarf, dark glasses, bandages all around his head and has a strange pink nose. But soon the villagers find out why the strange man is always dressed like that.
 He is a scientist who has done an extraordinary experiment on himself… What are its effects? Why is everybody terribly scared?
 The reader is enriched by stimulating inserts about science fiction plus invisibility in literature, science and cinema.

Con sgomento e terrore ben presto gli abitanti scoprono perché quell’uomo è sempre vestito così, sia dentro che fuori casa. Egli è uno scienziato che ha sperimentato su di sé una rivoluzionaria formula…

The Invisible Man The furniture goes crazy Chapter 2 It was late in the afternoon. Fearenside, the postman, and Henfrey, the clock repairer, were in a small pub.  I ll tell you something,  the postman said.  The man that my dog bit this morning  well  he s black. Yes, black! That s the colour that I saw through the hole in his trousers before he changed them.   Black?  Henfrey said.  That s strange because his nose is pink!   That s true,  Fearenside said.  Perhaps that man is like some dogs or horses   black spots1 here and white spots there. And he s ashamed2 of it.  The stranger worked very hard on his experiments in his room. On some days, he got up early; on others, he got up late. Sometimes Mr and Mrs Hall heard noises: bottles that were broken, heavy objects that were thrown on the floor or against the walls. Then, silence. He rarely went out during the day, but in the late afternoon, he came out of the inn, covered from head to foot in any weather. People that met him were afraid of him, children called him the  Bogey Man 3. One day, some villagers asked Mrs Hall,  Who s that man? What does he do here? What s his name?  Mrs Hall answered,  He s a scientist and he does experiments. He had a bad accident and his face and hands are terrible to see. That s why he covers himself. He doesn t want to speak about himself. He told me his name but  er  I can t remember it now.   I think he s a criminal in disguise4,  Mr Henfrey said.  He s trying to run away from the police.   He may be a terrorist that is preparing a bomb!  Fearenside exclaimed.  Perhaps a  black terrorist!  1. spot: small round area that has a different colour from the surface on which it is. 2. is ashamed: is embarrassed or guilty because of something he has done, or because of his appearance. 19 3. Bogey Man: imaginary evil spirit that frightens children. 4. in disguise: wearing something to change your appearance so that people do not recognize you.
