SYNOPSIS
In 2009, a genetically re-engineered virus, originally created as a cure for cancer, turns lethal. The virus kills 90% of the world’s population and turns 9.8% into zombie-like cannibalistic mutants called Darkseekers, who are extremely vulnerable to sunlight. Only very few people are immune to the virus and are the prey of the mutant Darkseekers.
Three years later, virologist Robert Neville lives an isolated life in a deserted Manhattan. He tries to find a cure for the virus and waits for immune humans to respond to his continuous radio messages. Flashbacks in his life reveal that his wife and daughter died in a helicopter accident during the chaotic evacuation of Manhattan.
Neville’s only companion is his dog Sam. At night, he barricades himself and Sam inside his fortified home to hide from the Darkseekers.
Neville finds a treatment derived from his own blood and captures a female Darkseeker. A male Darkseeker goes after them, but is blocked by the sunlight.
Neville realises he is being watched by the Darkseekers. One evening, as the sun is setting, he is attacked by infected dogs. Neville and Sam destroy them but Sam is bitten during the fight and dies.
Neville then deliberately attacks a group of Darkseekers and is rescued by two immune humans, Anna and a boy named Ethan, who have found him after hearing his radio messages. They are on their way to a survivors' camp, even though Neville does not think this camp exists.
Neville injects the female Darkseeker with the potential cure. The next night, a group of Darkseekers attack the house. Neville, Anna, and Ethan hide in the laboratory, where the female test subject is responding to the cure. Neville takes a vial of blood from her and gives it to Anna. He kills the Darkseekers, saving the cure.
Anna and Ethan later arrive at the survivors' camp. Anna gives them the cure and tells of how Neville’s sacrifice has saved humanity.
