THE OPERATING ROOM

What is an operating room like?

Modern operating rooms are spacious, easy to clean, usually with overhead surgical lights, and have viewing screens and monitors. They are generally windowless, with controlled temperature and humidity. They are separated from other departments so that only authorized personnel have access.

Electricity has back-up systems in case of a black-out. Key equipment consists of the operating table and the anaesthesia cart. In addition, there are tables for instruments. There is storage space for surgical supplies and containers for waste material. Outside the operating room, a dedicated scrubbing area1 is used by surgeons, anaesthetists and operating department nurses before surgery.

Several operating rooms are part of the operating suite that forms a distinct section within a hospital.

The operating room equipment

The operating room includes the following equipment:

  • the operating table in the centre of the room; it can be raised, lowered and tilted in any direction;
  • the operating room lights positioned over the table;
  • the anaesthesia machine at the head of the operating table, with tubes and monitors;
  • the anaesthesia cart, next to the anaesthesia machine with medications and equipment that the anaesthesiologist may need;
  • sterile instruments to be used during surgery arranged on a stainless steel table;
  • an electronic monitor which records the heart rate and respiratory rate of the patient.
