THE ITALIAN CROCEROSSINE
The ltalian Crocerossine are an exclusively feminine component of the ltalian Red Cross and an auxiliary unit of the ltalian Armed Forces. The unit was officially established by Elena of Montenegro, Queen ofltaly, in 1908. In the following years, about one thousand
nurses got their diploma and many of them took part in the rescue of the victims after the earthquake in Messina.
In WWl, over 7,000 voluntary nurses worked in the 204 Red Cross hospitals looking after more than 30,000 patients. In the 1930s, voluntary nurses operated in ltalian colonies and during the Civil War in Spain. Later, they gave a great contribution in ali the WW2 scenarios.
After WW2, they helped in several emergencies in ltaly and abroad. In more recent years, the ltalian Crocerossine were present in numerous UNO missions.
In 2020, they were of immense help during the Covid-19 pandemie in ltaly.
