Mental Health Services in Italy are organised as follows:

It consists of structures and services that are aimed at supporting care, assistance and the safeguard of mental health issues within the area of competence of each ASL (Azienda Sanitaria Locale, i.e. local health service).
The DSM can provide:

  • Psychiatric Diagnosis and Care Services are local hospital services where voluntary or compulsory treatment is administered by admitting patients. They feature no more than 16 beds and have rooms for rehabilitative activities.

  • Day hospitals are semi-residential assistance areas providing diagnosis and short/middle term rehabilitation therapy. They can be located inside hospitals and are connected with all the previously mentioned services. They are open at least 8 hours a day, 6 days a week.

1. Mental Health Centres are the closest to the community. They coordinate all local prevention, care and rehabilitation initiatives (e.g. psychotherapy, diagnosis, alcohol and drug abuse counselling, family counselling, cooperation with schools and charities, etc.). They work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. □

2. Day Centres are semi-residential structures located within the territory for therapeutic and rehabilitative purposes. They operate to improve self-care, daily activities and social contact often giving patients the chance to find a job. □

c. Angie has been diagnosed with schizophrenia by the Mental Health Centre and needs to receive therapy. She lives with her parents at home.
d. Fiona became homeless because of prolonged unemployment. She has poor hygiene and no clean clothes. Some people have taken her to the local community services.
e. Sean was arrested by the police then diagnosed by a psychiatrist. His personality disorders may harm himself and others. He was forcefully sent there.
