Dr Andrew Gordons, Professor at Edinburgh University, Department of Civil Engineering, is giving a lecture about surveying. His talk is given to the students of the Technical Secondary School in St Andrews. 12th March DR ANDREW GORDONS Edinburgh University Department of Civil Engineering  Types of surveys and their applicability  9.30 a.m. SCHOOL AUDITORIUM The lecture is about to start. The head-teacher is introducing the Lecturer to the students. ACTIVITIES a. Roy: What s the difference between archaeological survey and geological survey? b. Dr Gordons: A surveyor may work in lots of fields, from construction surveying to archaeological surveying, from geological surveying to hydrographic surveying and so on  c. Paula: What do you mean by hydrographic survey? d. Paula: Yes, thank you. Good morning, Professor. I d like to know if Surveying is usually included in University Studies. e. Headmaster: Good morning, everybody. I m very glad to have Dr Wallace in our school today. He s a well-known specialist in surveying techniques and his knowledge is required in lots of fields. Which student wants to be the first to ask a question? Ok, Paula, please, ask your question. f. Paula: In what fields can a surveyor find an occupation? g. Headmaster: Ok, over there, the student at the back  h. Dr Gordons: Well, it s also called As-Built Survey. This usually entails a complete survey of the site to confirm that the structures, utilities and roadways proposed were built in the proper locations authorized in the Site Plan. In our country, As-builts are usually done 2 or 3 times during the building of a house: once after the foundation has been poured; a second time after the walls are put up; and then on completion of the construction. i. Dr Gordons: A hydrographic survey is a survey conducted with the purpose of mapping the coastline and seabed for navigation or resource management purposes. Products of such surveys are nautical charts. j. Dr Gordons: An archaeological survey is used to accurately assess the relationship of archaeological sites in a landscape or to record finds on an archaeological site. Geological Survey is a generic term for a survey conducted for the purpose of recording the geologically significant features of the area under investigation. In the past, in remote areas, there was often no topographic map available, so the geologist also needed to be a competent surveyor to produce a map of the terrain. k. Dr Gordons: Good morning, everybody. First I wish to thank you for inviting me here. Well, to answer your question, sure. Roy: I m interested in construction surveying. Speaking MEET A SURVEYOR 1 David Bowen was a student at Edinburgh University and now he is an expert surveyor. He is very keen on talking about his profession. Use the information about him and the prompts below to build up an interview. STUDENT A: YOU ACTIVITIES David Bowen chose to become a surveyor because he found it to be the perfect blend of his interests: Technology, Mathematics, Outdoors, History. He greatly enjoys using modern technology to discover history, which is his main interest. He really likes working with the 3D laser scanner because this instrument is extremely precise and fast. He worked as a surveyor some years ago for a heritage project at Stonehenge. He joined a team and they carried out a survey of the whole area with laser scanners, total stations and GPS. The data were used to draw a detailed map of the site. Once he said that a young professional should explore the opportunities early in his career because it is the early years when he can enjoy experiences and opportunities that will last a lifetime. David s favourite part of his job is the business and the people. As a land surveyor, he comes into contact with all different kinds of people such as attorneys, engineers, architects, utility managers, farmers, developers, timber companies, etc. and everyone is different. He must be able to communicate with everyone because each person or company has to be handled differently. Surveying with a 3D laser scanner STUDENT B: DAVID BOWEN 1. Ask why he chose to become a surveyor. Talk about your interests. 2. Ask what instrument he enjoys using most. Give technical information. 3. Ask him to tell you about one of the most interesting work experiences he has had. Tell us about Stonehenge Heritage Project. 4. Ask what kind of recommendation he would pass on to young surveyors.
