In many countries in the public sector, the existing swimming pools are too expensive to maintain, so some local authorities have tried to rationalize their costs, closing pools with the greatest problems and focusing resources on new, larger facilities that are more popular, less costly to run and that can support a wider range of pool users. Pools are among the most expensive public-sector sports buildings to build and maintain. Some of the key concerns to be considered when designing a pool are:   Pool size. Dimensions of the pool tank and consequently of the building itself have a great impact on total cost.   Technical systems. Selection of systems can have a significant impact on the design, operating costs and management. Energy strategy must involve reduced consumption through the integrated design of the pool building, optimized ventilation and natural lighting, internal microclimate and solar shading systems. Solar thermal energy, photovoltaic energy, heat pumps and cogeneration are examples of high-energy efficiency systems that can be implemented in the sports facility.   Sanitation and filtration system. This includes a water filter to remove pollutants, disinfection to kill infectious micro-organisms, swimmer hygiene to minimize the introduction of contaminants into pool water.   Materials. The design of surfaces and selection of easy clean materials such as non-slip tiles are essential for public safety and effective cleaning. Millions of people are regular swimmers, mostly engaged in  purposeful  swimming related to sport, health and fitness or education. So a public sports building serving social purposes must adopt all the possible measures in order to reduce the loss of resources both on a financial level and on an energyconsumption level.
