BUILDING HIGHER GREEN ECONOMY A Green Economy is a clean, environmentally friendly economy that promotes health, wealth, and well-being. It is an economy in which every business tries to operate in harmony with nature, in which good governance is used to protect people, communities and nature against exploitation and abuse, and to generate social justice. Green Economy has been defined by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)1 as a sustainable economy with zero carbon emissions where all energy is derived from renewable resources which are naturally replenished. It is in contrast with Brown Economy where economic growth depends only on coal, petroleum and natural gas. In the process of this form of production, great amounts of carbon dioxide and PMs are released into the atmosphere. The economic development depends on restricted resources and the environmental pollution is severe. The idea of a more sustainable economy has been talked about for decades. In the last few years discussion around sustainability has become a key part of the global program. This is because the latest scientific studies and our direct experiences of environmental devastation and climate change are making it clear that the economic model needs to change. It is impossible to predict how the future will look, but some of the main aims in our green future could be: producing energy using low carbon methods and resources that will not run out such as solar power, wind power or geothermal energy; minimising waste, reducing what we consume, reusing things, and recycling where possible; using our resources more efficiently; providing what we need nearby growing food locally, for example. This conversion to a green economy is a big challenge that could take many years. But in addition to protecting the future of our planet, it will also create many new job opportunities in environmental fields. 1. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is an international organization established in 1972 to coordinate activities to increase scientific understanding of environmental change and develop environmental management tools.
