When he is informed that there is an order of 8 machines for the same store, he decides to go check out the drive-in and finds a small walk-up stand called McDonald s. Ray is surprised at how fast an order can be processed, at the disposable food wrappings used, as well as at the number of small families, besides the usual teenagers, who are ordering from that stand. Ray meets with the brothers Mac and Dick McDonald, owners of the stand, who show him their Speedee Service System : realizing that most of their profits came from selling hamburgers, French fries, and milkshakes, the brothers had focused on making these and on figuring out the most efficient layout plan of their stand for the food preparation. Ray is fascinated and proposes that the brothers franchise their restaurant. Soon, a contract is signed in which franchise decisions or changes cannot be made without the brothers consent, and he manages to get new franchisees by dealing with the workingclass. Instead of getting into financial problems with loans, Ray realizes that if he buys the land for the McDonald s locations, the franchise owners can lease the land from him, thus opening new restaurants without the brothers approval. However, while the McDonald brothers were passionate for quality ingredients which made maintenance expensive, Ray is willing to cut down these costs and wants to renegotiate the contract. He demands to be released from his contract and buys the brothers out. They expect a payment of $2.7 million, ownership of the San Bernardino store, and one percent of the company s profits, but Ray accepts the one-percent deal as a handshake deal, and never pays them.
