L'argomento Landmarks è un testo rivolto in particolare agli studenti dei corsi con indirizzo Costruzioni, Ambiente e Territorio e, più in generale a tutti coloro che hanno l’esigenza di utilizzare la lingua inglese come strumento di studio e/o di lavoro in questi settori. La struttura Landmarks è diviso in otto Moduli, ognuno dei quali è ripartito in due sezioni: Unità del Modulo – Contiene testi e attività che riguardano i contenuti specifici della specializzazione già affrontati in L1. Ogni Unità è suddivisa in brevi Capitoli su due pagine – teoria ed esercizi – per favorire sia uno studio più parcellizzato, sia la scelta antologica da parte dell’insegnante. I contenuti dei capitoli sono enucleati, cioè sono divisi in più paragrafi titolati per rendere la comprensione più agevole. Brevi link (verdi per i link attivi con attività, arancioni per quelli informativi senza attività) arricchiscono i brani per consentire una maggiore interattività con gli allievi. Alcune rubriche di approfondimento o curiosità, inoltre, permettono di ampliare le conoscenze sugli argomenti. Un ricco apparato iconografico correda i brani di lettura, per ognuno dei quali è previsto un esauriente glossario. Ogni Unità si chiude con una pagina di grammatica e una dedicata ad un’abilità linguistica. Alcune pagine sono strutturate secondo le indicazioni delle Prove Nazionali INVALSI.

3 BUILDING RENOVATION AND RESTORATION BUILDING RENOVATION   Has a part of your house or flat been renovated? If so, what kind of improvement has been made?   If not, what kind of renovation could be necessary to improve the living space? Do you know what health problems asbestos can cause? Are any parts of the building where you live made with materials containing asbestos? Compare your answer with those of your classmates. The commercial production of PCBs (Polychlorinated biphenyls) started in 1929 but their use has been banned or severely restricted in many countries since the 1970s and 80s because of the possible risks to human health and the environment. Building renovation or remodelling is the process of renewing and upgrading or making additions to an existing building. The most important reason is the improvement of the living comfort and indoor climate, reducing energy consumption and thus saving money at the same time.   Renovation process Improvement and added features: new flooring, such as carpets, tiles or solid hardwood, improving the equipment in the kitchen and bathroom, replacing windowsills and window fixtures. Comfort: upgrading heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC); increasing the capacity of plumbing and electrical systems, adding technological communication systems and home automation systems. Maintenance and repair: roof tear-off and replacement, concrete and masonry repairs to walls and the chimney; repairing plumbing and electrical systems. ASBESTOS REMOVAL The only way to completely remove the threat of asbestos exposure and its dangerous health effects is to remove all asbestos from the buildings. Products containing asbestos should only be handled by licensed asbestos removal professionals. In most cases, asbestos must be removed entirely; however, in some cases, asbestos material may be covered. Asbestos removal is usually required before an older building is demolished, before any maintenance or renovation works that could deteriorate materials containing asbestos or when materials containing asbestos are damaged. 3 Write a text (150/200 words) on the following topic.
