REAL-LIFE SKILLS DESCRIBING ARCHITECTURE: CITY LANDMARKS 6. Read the text and fill in the chart. The Sydney Opera House in Australia is one of the world’s most striking pieces of modern architecture. It is located on the south side of the harbour, just east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In 1954, the government of New South Wales gave its approval for the building of a multipurpose performing arts centre. A contest was held in 1956 to decide on the design for the building. Jørn Utzon, a young Danish architect, won the contest. His winning entry brought Utzon international fame. His design was of two main halls on a raised platform facing the harbour. Each hall was topped with a row of sail-shaped interlocking panels made of pre-cast concrete that would serve as both roof and wall. Construction began in 1959. It was due to be finished in 1963. However, there were many problems that caused a long delay. The first public performance at the Opera House took place in September 1973. The following month, Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the building. The Opera House is Sydney’s best-known landmark. The Concert Hall hosts symphony concerts, choir performances, and popular music shows. The Opera Theatre hosts operas and dance performances, including ballets. There are also three smaller theatres, restaurants, and a professional recording studio. The Sydney Opera House was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007.
