L’argomento.
 Lives è un testo di civiltà che intende stimolare la curiosità verso culture, popolazioni, abitudini e stili diversi dalla nostra per favorire la reciproca comprensione. I brani fanno riferimento ai principali paesi parlanti la lingua inglese: Gran Bretagna, Irlanda, Stati Uniti, Australia e Sud Africa.
 
 Ciascuna Unità presenta testi originali, informativi ed accattivanti, suddivisi per argomenti:

 Ogni Unità prevede:

</li><li>un ampio glossario, per offrire una lettura agevole e scorrevole
</li><li>diversi esercizi di comprensione, per consolidare l’apprendimento e stimolare l’analisi
</li><li>una rubrica dedicata all’Agenda 2030 e alle Competenze del XXI secolo
</li><li>un’attività di Do-it-yourself: compiti di realtà da svolgere in coppia o in gruppo
</li></ul>Ogni sezione si conclude con delle mappe riepilogative per singolo brano, utile supporto allo studio e all’analisi.
 
 La sezione dedicata alla classe terza include altri spunti per l’Esame di Stato, suggerendo, per ciascun brano, possibili collegamenti interdisciplinari. Il testo si chiude con delle mappe geopolitiche e un piccolo gioco: “Guess the Country!”.

Young people hang out there on Saturday night, but pubs are also open every day, even during lunchtime, and are particularly crowded after 5pm, after work. The typical drink is beer, but if you can t drink alcohol (if you are under 18), you can have soft drinks. In pubs you can also taste typical British food almost all day long, so if you are hungry at 4pm you can go there with friends, play cards or billiards and have some typical British food. Some pubs are known for a specific thing, for example as a venue for a certain genre of music or for people gathering to watch and support a certain football team. Pub etiquette Here are four essential rules to follow in a British pub.   Skip the tip . It is not common to tip the barman in most pubs in the UK. Instead, buy the barman a drink.   No pushing. In almost all pubs you need to order at the bar. Once at the front, don t push and wait for your turn (or  round , as they call it in pubs).   Don t block the bar. Is there a large group of you? Decide on one person from your group to order and let everyone else relax at the table.   Respect the bell. Last orders are usually around 10.30 pm or 11pm on Sunday. Bar staff will ring a bell to signal it is time to place your last orders. They will then ring it again to signal the bar is closing. A2 England s famous pubs Some pubs are real monuments of English history. Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem in Nottingham is considered the oldest in England. It dates back to 1189 and its name comes from the crusading knights who stopped there during their journey to Jerusalem. The Turks Head in Penzance, Cornwall, dates back to 1233 and takes its name from the  Turks  (pirates from North Africa) who invaded Penzance around that time and who used a tunnel running from the pub to the harbour . The Crooked House, in Dudley, is definitely the weirdest pub in the UK. It was built at the end of the 18th century on a hollow ground that caused the building to slope . Scottish brewing reached a peak of 280 breweries in 1840, but then breweries started merging and this brought about some changes. The higher hop quantity of some beers made them perfect products for export, so Edinburgh and Alloa became famous centres for the export of beer around the world. By 1920, there were only 62 breweries left. The decline continued and by 1960 there were 26 and by 1970 only 11. At the end of the 20th century, small breweries began to re-appear all over Scotland and the decline was reversed. Today, Scotland is home to 80 breweries.
