 Lives è un testo di civiltà che intende stimolare la curiosità verso culture, popolazioni, abitudini e stili diversi dalla nostra per favorire la reciproca comprensione. I brani fanno riferimento ai principali paesi parlanti la lingua inglese: Gran Bretagna, Irlanda, Stati Uniti, Australia e Sud Africa.
 
 Ciascuna Unità presenta testi originali, informativi ed accattivanti, suddivisi per argomenti:

 Ogni Unità prevede:

</li><li>un ampio glossario, per offrire una lettura agevole e scorrevole
</li><li>diversi esercizi di comprensione, per consolidare l’apprendimento e stimolare l’analisi
</li><li>una rubrica dedicata all’Agenda 2030 e alle Competenze del XXI secolo
</li><li>un’attività di Do-it-yourself: compiti di realtà da svolgere in coppia o in gruppo
</li></ul>Ogni sezione si conclude con delle mappe riepilogative per singolo brano, utile supporto allo studio e all’analisi.
 
 La sezione dedicata alla classe terza include altri spunti per l’Esame di Stato, suggerendo, per ciascun brano, possibili collegamenti interdisciplinari. Il testo si chiude con delle mappe geopolitiche e un piccolo gioco: “Guess the Country!”.

READING SPEAKING 43 A sustainable city should be eco-friendly, have green spaces, reduce air pollution and CO2 emissions, improve air quality, and protect natural resources. In other words, it should be an urban centre designed to improve its environmental impact while also granting a high-quality lifestyle to people. Green technology is a key factor which includes all aspects of city planning, including transportation, infrastructures, telecommunications, recycling and the use of renewable energy in homes and offices (over 100 cities now get at least 70% of their electricity from renewable sources such as hydro, geothermal, solar and wind!). This type of city is becoming essential to fight global climate change. Six characteristics of a sustainable city Cities can do several things to be called sustainable and must have these six characteristics:   Make it easy to get around without a car: sustainable cities should create paths , bike bridges and sidewalks and encourage citizens to walk, ride, or use local transport;   Add electric charging stations: hybrid and electric cars can dramatically reduce toxic emissions, so the presence of many charging stations is fundamental to encourage the use of those cars;   Provide access to public resources and green spaces (parks and recreational areas);   Improve waste management: programmes to minimise waste by recycling, composting, and reusing materials are crucial;   Support urban farming, which improves food production and the environmental effects of food transportation. It includes vertical gardens, rooftop farming, community gardens, and encouraging schools and restaurants to grow food;   Implement green architecture: green architects are discovering innovative ways to reduce the use of resources and gas emissions, from using natural building materials and solar panels, to improving ventilation and insulation , and planting more trees. 1 READING Completa le frasi. 1. Besides this, it has an excellent public transport service that runs on clean energy and lets people leave cars at home. Also, it ensures that 97% of their residents have Internet access to make Canberra a connected city. Brisbane also has a strict programme to protect native plants and wildlife, creating a perfect balance between nature and inhabited areas. Canberra WRITING Sustainable Transport In the 2030 Agenda, sustainable transport is fundamental across several goals and targets. Cities should promote sustainable and inclusive transport systems by using public, non-motorised transport, new technologies (smart buses) and sustainable urban models (for example compact cities where you can walk or bike a short distance to work instead of driving). The transport sector will play a particularly important role in the achievement of the Paris Agreement , which is an international treaty on climate change. It is proved that a quarter of global gas emissions come from transport and if no actions are taken soon, these emissions will keep growing in the future.
