E X T E N S I O N THE ROARING TWENTIES: EVERYTHING SHOUTS NEW! The 1920s, or the  Roaring1 Twenties  as we call them, was a decade of signi  cant change and innovation in the United States. This period was marked by a growing economy, cultural revolutions, and innovative improvements in technology. Let s explore each of these topics in more detail. Jazz: the soundtrack of the Roaring Twenties One of the leading cultural movements of the 1920s was jazz music. Everything started among African-American communities in New Orleans, at work in the   elds: music helped to shape black identity and keep it strong and united. It was both a bond and a protest. The main characteristics of jazz were its vibrant2 rhythms, improvisation, and a mix of different musical traditions, including blues and ragtime. That is why jazz not only transformed the music scene, but also played a crucial role in overcoming racial barriers. Famous jazz musicians like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Bessie Smith became popular all over America, performing in clubs and 1. roaring: making a continuous loud deep noise. 2. vibrant: full of life and energy. 36

Jazz music even in  uenced dance styles, leading to the creation of new dances like the Charleston, the Castle Walk, and the Maxixe, which became extremely popular in dance halls and nightclubs. Finally, jazz also inspired great creativity in literature: for example, one of the most famous authors of this time, Francis Scott Fitzgerald, captured the spirit of the era with his book The Great Gatsby, calling this period the  Jazz Age , where ambition, love, and the American dream were the protagonists. Women s emancipation3: the Flapper era The 1920s saw signi  cant progress in women s rights and social status. One of the most iconic symbols of this change was the  Flapper , a young woman who opposed traditional norms and conducted a lifestyle which was much less restraining4 than before. Flappers wore their hair and skirts short and openly challenged society with their behavior, including smoking and drinking in public. The   ght for allowing women not to be second-class citizens anymore began in 1903 in the United Kingdom, where Mrs. Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughter Christabel founded the  suffragette  movement and protested in public with other supporters to introduce the vote for women. Though most times they were injured and imprisoned, their motto was  Deeds not Words  and their victory came in 1918, when women over thirty were allowed to vote.Their success inspired similar political waves all around the world. 3. emancipation: the act of freeing somebody, especially from legal, political or social controls that limit what they can do. 4. restraining: stopping somebody/ something from doing something, especially by using physical force. 37
